Scratches an itch for gritty urban vampire stories à la Fright Night, The Lost Boys. Set in the 70s, it follows a haunted Vietnam vet and his troubled niece as they journey through the unthinkable. It’s a surprising exploration of how rage and vengeance gnaw on the spirit long after the deepest cut, reopening wounds until they fester.
Though it’s fun in other vamp tales, I appreciated how this didn’t luxuriate in the decadence that usually parallels the gothic tropes. It’s wretched, fetid, and lonely.
